Tokyo Olympics 2021 Highlights: Chanu’s silver opens India’s medal tally

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won India’s first medal on the first day in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 today.

India’s first medal, on the very first day in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 by the weightlifter Saikom Mirabai Chanu.

Mirabai claims silver in the women’s 49-kilogram weightlifting. She had a total lift of 202 kilograms – 87 kilograms in the snatch and 115 kilograms in clean and jerk.

Mirabai finished second behind China’s Hou Zihui 210 kilograms, Hou Zihui also set an Olympic record in the snatch.

However, there is disappointment in the Indian shooters as Saurab Chaudhary finished at the seventh position in the men’s 10 meter Air Pistol final.

Apurvi Chandela finished on 36th while on 16th Elavenil Valarivan finished and that’s why failed to qualify for the women’s qualification round in the 10m air rifle.

China wins the first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics 2021 as Qian Yang topped women’s 10m air rifle event.

Indian Shooters Apurvi Chandel and Elavenil Valarivan both were knocked out in the qualification round in the same event.

The mixed team of Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav’s charged into the quarterfinals. They win the first match against Chinese Taipei but failed to win the Korean challenge in the quarterfinals.

Boxer Vikas Krishan was defeated by Japan’s Sewonrets Quincy Mensah Okazawa, in his Men’s Welter (69kg) Round of 32 clashes.

In a table tennis singles event, Manika Batra won her first-round match against Tin-Tin Ho of Great Britain in straight games.

While, In the straight games against the Chinese Taipei pair of Yun Ju Lin and Ching I Cheng, Sharath Kamal, and Batra lost in their Round of 16 clashes in the mixed doubles event.

In tennis, Sumit Nagal won against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in his first-round singles match.

In badminton, the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Chinese Taipei’s Yang Lee and Chi-Lin Wang.

While badminton player Sai Praneeth was beaten by Israel’s Misha Zilberman in the men’s singles Group Stage.

In men’s hockey, India won with New Zealand with 3-2 in the Pool A match. However, Netherlands beat the Indian women’s hockey team.
